Thank you so much for your interest in supporting pop-up portraits. As I enter into birth work I wanted to find a way to redirect resources and support BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) who have been doing this work long before me.

Who will this pop-up support?

This pop-up is intended to send money to Efe Osaren’s midwifery fund. Efe is a midwifery student currently working in Austin, Tx. You can read more about her story here.

“Despite a long history of midwifery in the black community, black women currently represent less than 2% of the nation's reported 15,000 midwives. Relatedly, black women and infants experience the worst birth outcomes of any racial-ethnic cohort in the United States.” (Birthing, Blackness, and the Body - Keisha La’Nesha Goode, October 2014)

We, our country, need more Black midwives. More safe spaces for BIPOC to be supported in the transformation of birth without experiencing implicit bias and racism.

Why fund this work?

We are failing mothers and babies in our communities.

“Black infants in America are now more than twice as likely to die as white infants compared with white babies…. a racial disparity that is actually wider than in 1850.” (Why America’s Black Mothers and Babies Are in a Life-orDeath Crisis - Linda Villarosa, April 2018

“Black mothers are dying at three to four times the rate of non-Hispanic white mothers. Racism is the driver and we must do more to save black women’s lives.” (Maternal Mortality and the Devaluation of Black Motherhood - Jamila Taylor, April 2018)
